Brent didn't start Marshall & Stewart because he spotted a gap in the market. He started it because he'd spent 40 years in the luxury bed industry and knew, from the inside, that the biggest brands were charging more than they needed to and building less than they could.
From the world's best Hastens showroom to something better
He'd run the UK operation for Hastens for seven years. His London showroom became the best-performing Hastens store in the world, out of 194 globally. He won their international sales competition three years running. He personally sold the very first Hastens Vividus anywhere in the world when it launched in 2006.
Then Hastens entered Harrods and began discounting, undermining the independent dealers who'd built the brand. Brent walked away. His decision: rather than represent someone else's product, he would build his own. Better materials. More handwork. No middleman. No brand tax. Every saving poured into the bed or passed back to the customer.

The moment your muscles let go
The first time you lie on a Marshall & Stewart, something shifts. It's not dramatic in the way you'd expect. There's no bounce, no sinking, no obvious softness. What happens is quieter than that: every part of your body makes contact with the surface at once. Your muscles, which have spent years compensating for a bed that doesn't support you properly, start to let go.

Every Marshall & Stewart bed is filled with horsehair, wool, cashmere, cotton, and flax. Nothing synthetic. Nothing foam. This isn't a marketing position; it's a manufacturing commitment written into the company's Code of Ethics. The horsehair comes from the tail and mane (the longest, most resilient strands), and it's hand-teased by skilled craftspeople using nothing but their fingers. The loft this creates cannot be replicated by machine. A single Cullinan mattress contains 25 to 30 kg of horsehair and weighs approximately 125 kg.
Handmade in England, 40 to 160 hours per bed
Each bed is built by hand. The fillings are finger-massaged into place layer by layer. The borders are hand side-stitched in two rows. The top-of-range bases are hand-lashed in a star formation, a process that takes two to three days for a single base. There is no production line. Every bed is made to order.
The complete sleep system
Marshall & Stewart doesn't sell mattresses. It sells a system: divan base, mattress, and De Luxe topper, each engineered to work together. The base contains its own springs that actively contribute to the feel. The topper captures moisture and wear, protecting the mattress beneath so it can last 20 to 25 years. Brent's framing: "The topper is a disposable part, like tyres on a car. Replace it every four to five years and the bed underneath stays fresh for decades."

We also have beds at our King's Road showroom (638-640 King's Road, London SW6 2DU). Open Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5.30pm. No appointment needed, but allow up to two hours.
Brent recommends it strongly. The topper absorbs nightly moisture and wear that would otherwise go into the mattress. Without it, you'd need to replace the mattress every 8 to 10 years for hygiene. With it, the mattress lasts 20 to 25 years and you replace just the topper every 4 to 5 years. It also adds a layer of comfort that reduces pressure from the springs even further.
