Duvets

The climate control of your sleep. Proper goose down keeps you warm at a surprisingly light weight, so a good duvet almost disappears as you fall asleep.

The most common duvet mistake is buying one that is too warm. People do not trust a light duvet to keep them cosy, so they overheat themselves all night and wonder why they sleep badly. Proper goose down does not need a heavy tog.

Brent Cooper, founder

Which tog?

Tog measures warmth, not quality. The better the down, the less you need, so do not judge a duvet by its weight in the hand.

A duvet isn't just a blanket. It's the climate control of your sleep. Get it right and your body rests undisturbed. Brent Cooper
  • 2.5 to 4.5 tog for summer, or year-round if you run hot. Our 2.5 tog is lighter than a standard summer duvet, for sleepers who feel the heat.
  • 7.5 to 10.5 tog for spring and autumn, and enough for most of the UK year.
  • 12 to 13.5 tog for deep winter.
  • All-season sets clip a 4.5 and a 7.5 together, so you adjust as the year turns.

Fillings and feel

Our duvets are the Marshall & Stewart collection, hand-filled by a long-established German atelier in Altenburg, the same masters of down who make our pillows. Goose down traps air rather than heat, which is what makes it light yet warm.

Goose down grades

  • Hungarian: reliable softness and warmth, our most accessible.
  • Canadian: larger clusters, loftier insulation for less weight.
  • Siberian: rare and exceptionally efficient, warmer with less filling, for those who want lightness above all.

Beyond down

  • Eiderdown: hand-harvested from Arctic nests, virtually weightless yet instantly warming. An heirloom duvet.
  • Camel hair and cashmere: natural weight and drape, for those who like the tucked-in blanket feel.
  • Silk: naturally hypoallergenic and inhospitable to dust mites, ideal for asthma or allergies.

Casings

Every duvet is sewn into tightly woven cambric cotton, which stops the filling migrating while letting the duvet breathe. For our finest duvets we specify Swiss Batiste cambric: noiseless, featherproof and ultra-light. Box construction keeps the fill evenly spread so there are no cold spots.

Why it matters

The right temperature

High-quality down regulates heat better, which means fewer night-time wakeups and deeper rest.

Weightless comfort

The better the down, the less is needed, so you feel light and cocooned rather than smothered.

Healthier sleep

Silk and natural fillings help combat dust mites and allergies, with the weight of a blanket and the ease of a duvet.

Luxury that lasts

Superior casings and fillings keep their loft and softness for years when cared for properly.

Made to fit, made to last

Our duvets can be made in any size, from extra-long for a 7ft bed to round for a yacht berth, or fully bespoke. Many people choose one size larger than the mattress, a super king on a king bed for example, for a more generous drape that keeps draughts out and gives the bed a finished, hotel-like look.

Air a down duvet regularly and shake it to keep the loft. Have it professionally laundered rather than putting it through a domestic machine. Cared for this way, a fine down duvet lasts many years, and silk and wool fills hold up beautifully too.

What we'd steer you away from

The same honest advice we give in the showroom. These are the duvet mistakes we see most often.

Buying for looks

Big, fluffy and heavy looks inviting, but it overheats you all night. Good down keeps you warm at a much lighter tog.

One heavy tog all year

A single thick duvet leaves you too hot for half the year. An all-season set or a lighter tog suits most homes far better.

A duvet that fits the mattress exactly

Sized to the mattress, it leaves gaps and draughts. One size up drapes properly and keeps you covered.

Washing down at home

A domestic machine clumps the down and ruins the loft. Professional laundering protects the filling you paid for.
